The local community supported the development and launching of the Wangal Indigenous Garden and Playground in 2007. There is also an active group of volunteers who support in the classroom, on committees and in the canteen. The New Horizons Project has been a community based program by building a school culture of harmony, respect, resilience and life-long learning. Through the project the school seeks to address student and family need, by lending support, connecting individuals with resources and personnel, and coordinating a parent workshop and forum program. The New Horizons Coordinator is Ms Joan Drummond. This program is a continuation of the very successful 2008 Living in Harmony Project. Good Beginnings in conjunction with the school run a Supported Playgroup Program: ‘Play and Learn’ for 0-5 year olds and their carers and a year long Transition to School Program. The Community Liaison Coordinator Ms Heather Gorton (2 days a week) is an additional support to the school in matters of student well-being. The school has an academic partner Dr Phil Cam (UNSW) who works with the school community in inquiry-based learning (Philosophy for Children) and a mentor Ms Peta Blood who works with the school community in embedding processes of restorative justice. |
