Harmony Day

ASHFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOL

HARMONY DAY - 21st March 2008

On the 14th March, 2008, APS celebrated it's first New Horizons Building Cross - Cultural Community Bridges forum: Harmony Day.

Harmony Day has been a celebration of cultures at APS for some years. Originating from the Australian government's initiative of  "Racism-No Way", Harmony Day encourages schools to speak about racial tolerance, to learn to recognise cultural differences, discuss the importance and acceptance of cultural and religious practices.

The cultural mix of the APS community lends itself to recognising differences between cultural groups, and to develop a tolerance and understanding of them.

A feature of Harmony Day 2008 was the Harmony Expo. A number of community organisations were contacted and invited to showcase their products. Information was presented through a combination of displays, brochures, discussions and interaction with other stallholders. The information was suitable for both interested community members and parents.

To involve the students, a number of child centered activities were provided. These included African Drumming, Japanese Fan Making, Story Telling, Table Tennis Competition, and Indian Dancing.

The day began with a procession of flags of the countries represented at the school. There are approximately 40 different nationalities in a school population of 240. Orange ribbons, the official colour of Harmony fluttered in the breeze. Stalls decorated the hall and playground, with stalls representing many diverse groups. These are listed in the Community Resources Booklet.
