International Food Fair

In keeping with the spirit of community co-operation, the New Horizon Building Cross Cultural Community Bridges fourth forum was an International Food Fair. This was held on Saturday 8th November.

This was the first Saturday event which had been held at the school in a long time. The challenge was to get people visit the school on the weekend. The aim was to encourage integration of Ashfield's cultural groups by creating an atmosphere of sharing and sense of belonging.  It was hoped that this would allow people time to relax and meet other Ashfield families.  Local businesses were canvassed for their interest and support, community groups contacted and flyers distributed.Families and other community members donated food which was available for sale.

Community Language Groups use the school premises after school hours. These groups, which number  up to 300 students and their families, were approached to participate. Communication is limited between students of APS and Community Language Groups because of time restraints, so the Fair provided a relaxing and fun filled day for everyone to mix.

A festive atmosphere was instantly created. Cafe tables and chairs, decorations of flags and international colours surrounded the covered food stalls. Stalls were dotted throughout the playground selling Christmas gifts, plants, flowers and home produce, traditional handicrafts and pre-loved goods.

Entertainment was provided by music students from the Chinese, Indian and South Pacific communities.

Together in the spirit of wandering minstrels, the Rosetski Brothers show gave displays of juggling, ballooning, comic waiters, accompanied by violin and piano accordion synchronised improvisations. Craft activities, a chess competition and a jumping castle added to the fun.

Dishes representing cultural cuisines of India, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Philippines, France, Greece, Egypt, Chile, Korea, Tonga, Samoa and Ghana as well as Australia, were represented on the food stalls.  Tastings were enjoyed, flavours compared, recipes swapped, all creating an atmosphere of cultural exchange, understanding and harmony.  Everyone was so proud of their culture and eager to share and learn from others. It was a truly harmonious experience.
